Five Life Saving Numbers

Who doesn't know Dr Oz?

He is a doctor, Cardiothoracic surgeon, and a host for his own TV Programme, The Dr. Oz show. click here for more details.

So according to Dr. Oz, there are five numbers that we need to know, in order to have a long fulfilled plus healthy life, that is called as Five Life Saving Numbers (or something like that I couldn't remember the exact name)

And as you can see in my title post, I am going to reveal it, yeah!

Okay put disclaimer first, this post is not about judging someone's health or life-style or something. Or bragging about myself having all the numbers figure's right. It's all about spreading a facts that I find it useful and I'd like to share with you guys. and hey, a piece of information (esp health) could save someone's life, agree?

The first three are the numbers that you can measure at home/ by yourself.

1. Blood Pressure.

What is blood pressure?

Blood pressure is a pressure exerted by circulating blood thru blood vessels.  As our heart beating, the blood pressure plays significant in our body, as our blood carries oxygen and other important substantial throughout the body.

The blood pressure numbers are written like a fraction, example, 120/80. The upper numbers is Systolic blood pressure. It measures the pressure inside the blood vessels at the moment heart beats. And the lower numbers is Diastolic blood pressure. It measures the pressure in blood pressure, between heartbeat when the heart is resting.

Normal blood pressure for adult is 120/80. But okay, let's be real here, people are more concern about high blood pressure coz it can cause stroke, cardiac arrest, or any other complicated diseases. So it's good to have in between above mentioned numbers but blood pressure counting is depends on overall environment, family history, and diet.
So for adult, the upper numbers cannot be more than 140. More than 140 meaning you develop high-blood pressure and you have to reduce it by taking medication or avoid salt/ sodium intake.

For me personally, my last year check up was shown as 110/60 and this year's result is 105/60. So now you know I am a low blood-group aka I need more blood supply :-D

2. Waist line

This is a bit tricky, how to exactly measure the waist line? Waist is a narrow point of the abdomen between ribcage and hip. Still in the stomach area but 1 to 1.5 inch above the navel. Around there. Yup Yup this pics shows it all.

Waist line

For women, the less is numbers, the better, isn't it? :-D

But theoretically, waist line should not be more than 35 inches. Using digital converter 35 inches equals to 88.89 cm. Okay la round adjustment 89cm. Mine is 69cm *snob face*

3. Weight

Some people said, you cannot ask women about these numbers:

- Age
-Weight

isn't it?

why?

coz it's sensitive.

But getting to know what is your weight is equally important. For women, weight cannot be more than 175lbs. Don't want to tell you how many kg it is (remember it's sensitive issue) But one thing to remember, your weight doesn't determine fats, okay? Body fats determine fats. Make sense!?

Well, for me, my BMI is still within normal but my body fat is 30.7%. (see...I am FAT and struggling to shed those fats, too) Here is the link for BMI calculator. go and find out yourself.

Okay the last 2 numbers, you have to get your GP to measure.

4. Cholesterol

There are 2 types of cholesterol:

- Cholesterol HDL
HDL- good cholesterol. the more the better.  The desirable result is 40-60mg.

- Cholesterol LDL
LDL- bad cholesterol. the less the better. The desirable result is below 100mg.

You should check with your doctor for professional medical advice.  I am no position to advice this. But in my opinion, for HDL the more the better and for LDL, the less the better.

How to maintain the desirable result?

It's super easy, maintain healthy lifestyle such as exercise (30-60 minutes for 3 days a week), healthy diet ( no fried or junk food plus avoid trans-fat intake, eat more veggies and fruits), no smoking, and no alcohol are the key to maintain cholesterol. But if it's severe, you may be suggested by your doctor to take medication to control it.

5. Fasting blood sugar.

Remember before go down to clinic, fasting for at least 8 hours in order to get accurate results.

The desirable result is in between 60-126mg but to be precise, you should seek for your doctor's advices. High blood sugar can lead to diabetes and diabetes can lead to blindness, hearing loss, and heart problem. Although it's a common disease in Singapore but you don't want to be part of them, do you?

Hope this article is useful. Again, you could save someone's life with a piece of health information.
For me, knowing these five numbers annually means a lot for me, it can keep me on track, a constant reminder to maintain healthy diet and healthy life-style.

I wanna live for hundred years!
